Almsgiving is a fundamental practice of Lent, serving as one of its three pillars, alongside prayer and fasting. It is considered a pillar of Lent because it embodies the call to love and serve others, reflecting the compassion and generosity that Jesus taught. By giving to those in need, we practice selflessness and charity, which are central to the Lenten journey of spiritual renewal.
In Lent, the preparatory season leading up to Easter and the celebration of Christ's resurrection, almsgiving helps us prepare spiritually by aligning our hearts with the selfless love and generosity exemplified by Jesus.
Jesus heavily emphasized acts of compassion, kindness, and generosity toward the less fortunate in his time on earth. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus says, "Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me."
Many of his parables and teachings address issues related to providing direct assistance to those facing poverty, hunger, sickness, or other challenges.
